During a recent coaching call with one of my clients, I reminded him of something I always say:
“Use me as your resource.”

His response was honest and eye-opening:

“Okay, but how should I be working with a business coach? Like… what questions do I ask? How do I make sure I’m getting everything I can out of this?”

Whew. That question right there sparked this blog post. Because the truth is, a lot of people hire a coach and then don’t fully leverage the experience. They show up to calls, take notes, but don’t really drive the conversation or use the coach as a full-on business asset.

If that’s you—or you’ve been wondering whether you’re “doing it right”—this post will walk you through how to work with a coach the right way. Whether you’re brand new to entrepreneurship or scaling past six figures, here’s how to maximize every session and turn coaching into results.

1. Know Why You Hired a Coach

Before you can get full value, you’ve got to be clear on your why.

Did you hire your coach to…

  • Help you build systems?
  • Hold you accountable?
  • Grow your revenue?
  • Break out of stagnation?

If you’re not clear on what success looks like in your coaching container, it’s going to be tough to measure progress.

So start here:
Write down 1–3 goals you want to accomplish with your coach within the next 90 days.
Then, share those goals on your next call and say:

“How do we reverse-engineer a plan to make this happen?”

2. Ask Better Questions, Get Better Results

One of the biggest game-changers I see in my clients is when they shift from passive to active coaching. They don’t just show up and wait for me to guide everything—they come with questions. And powerful ones at that.

Here are a few of my favorite questions clients can ask me (or any coach):

  • What am I not seeing right now that could hurt or help my business?
  • Where should I focus first to generate revenue fast?
  • What would you do if you were in my exact position?
  • How can I stand out in my market?
  • What tools, templates, or strategies do you already have that I should be using?

These kinds of questions open the door to deeper coaching, clarity, and action plans you can apply immediately.

3. Come Prepared With Updates, Wins & Roadblocks

The best coaching sessions don’t start with “So… what are we working on today?”

You’ll get way more out of your time if you show up already knowing:

  • What you implemented since the last call
  • What wins you had (big or small)
  • What you’re stuck on or confused about
  • What new ideas came up that you want feedback on

Think of your coaching session like a strategy lab, not just a therapy session. You’re here to build, not just talk.

4. Use Your Coach Beyond the Call

A lot of business coaches (me included) offer more than just Zoom calls. My clients have access to resources, templates, pricing calculators, scripts, contracts, and sometimes direct feedback between sessions.

If your coach is a seasoned expert, don’t let that knowledge sit on a shelf. Ask questions like:

  • Do you have a script for this?
  • Can you review this proposal before I send it?
  • Is there a tool you recommend for this stage of my business?

Use your coach like a strategic partner. You’re not bothering them—you’re doing exactly what the investment is meant for.

5. Implement Fast & Ask for Accountability

Coaching is a two-way street. Your coach can map the route, but you still have to drive.

So after each session:

  • Write down 1–3 action steps you’re going to take immediately.
  • Share them with your coach for accountability.
  • Circle back during the next session to review results or pivots.

I always say: Progress doesn’t come from information—it comes from implementation. And only YOU can do the work.

Final Thoughts: You Get Out What You Put In

A business coach isn’t just someone you talk to every few weeks. When used right, they’re a GPS, mirror, strategist, accountability partner, and business bestie all rolled into one.

So if you’ve been wondering whether you’re “doing it right,” remember this:

  • Be clear on your goals.
  • Ask questions boldly.
  • Use the resources.
  • Show up prepared.
  • Take action between sessions.

And if you’re not in a coaching program yet but know you need guidance, mentorship, and strategy to scale… let’s talk.

Spots are limited, but if you’re ready for strategy, accountability, and real results, apply here for coaching.
Don’t wait until you’re overwhelmed or burnt out to get support. The entrepreneurs who grow the fastest aren’t doing it alone, and you shouldn’t either.

Your next level isn’t a mystery. It’s a decision.
Ask better questions. Take bold action. And get the guidance you need before you actually need it.
